Chicago Police Chief Stands with Federal Agents, Warns Deadly Force Is Justified if Vehicles Are Used as Weapons

In a strongly worded press briefing, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling made it clear that law enforcement — including federal agents such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — will not tolerate attacks on officers and agents using vehicles as weapons. Snelling emphasized that drivers who intentionally ram federal or local law enforcement vehicles or attempt to "box in" agents with other cars are engaging in what the law considers a deadly force attack, and officers are legally justified in responding accordingly to protect themselves and the public.

Snelling's statement came against the backdrop of a series of violent confrontations in Chicago in recent months, including incidents in which federal agents' vehicles were struck by cars and chaotic protests around immigration enforcement operations such as "Operation Midway Blitz."

In his remarks, the superintendent was clear:

"If you ram any vehicle, especially one carrying law enforcement agents, that's deadly force. Officers can use deadly force in response to stop you."

Snelling also addressed rumors that Chicago Police had been ordered to stand down while federal agents faced attacks. He stated unequivocally that local police were not prevented from assisting and that Chicago remains committed to upholding law and order during federal operations.

The comments have sparked debate across political and media circles, with supporters praising Snelling for prioritizing the safety of law enforcement, and critics warning about the potential for increased violence and escalated tension between officers and residents during immigration enforcement actions.

Regardless of where one stands on immigration policy, the message from Chicago's top cop is unmistakable: violent attacks against law enforcement using vehicles will not be tolerated, and officers have the legal right to defend themselves.
